Rehearsal Director, Dramaturgy Advisor and Researcher
Sophie Michaud began her dance career in the early eighties. After completing a bachelor's degree in dance and exploring movement through interpretation and choreography, she chose to deepen her knowledge of creative dance by occupying the position of "rehearsalist". As part of her graduate studies (master's degree in dance and doctoral studies in the study and practice of the arts at UQAM) and through sustained practice, she specializes in accompanying choreographic projects. Director of rehearsals, artistic and dramaturgical advisor, she has collaborated with many choreographers of different generational and stylistic affiliations. Her career is notably marked by long involvements in companies: Bouge de là, Cas Public, Corpuscule Danse, Catherine Gaudet Danse, Lucie Grégoire Danse, Lorganisme (Amélie Rajotte, Caroline Laurin-Beaucage), Sinha Danse, Manon fait de la danse , Fleuve Espace Danse and Human PlayGround. In recent years, she has also developed fruitful collaborations with the companies Other Animals (Alexandre Morin/Jonathan Goulet), La sporée (Sarah Bronsard), Les Sœurs Schmutt, Le Radeau (Ariane Boulet), the collective Vâtchik Danse and the lighting designer artist Hugo Dalphond.
As a researcher and practitioner, she develops a reflection on the methods of communication and ethics that she reinvests in each of the contexts in which she intervenes, giving primary importance to the intertwining of artistic and relational issues and their manifestations in the studio. . To date, she has accumulated more than two hundred participations in scenic, filmic, in situ choreographic creation projects and multidisciplinary productions. On the fringes of the studio, Sophie Michaud is also known as the artist who, since the early 90s, has ensured the promotion of the profession of director of dance rehearsals. She is also the ideator and artistic director of archival research that will lead to the creation of a virtual exhibition aimed at de-anonymizing Quebec artists experienced in the functions of assistant and advisor. Informed by extensive experience in the creative process, Sophie Michaud also acts as a consultant, writer, trainer and artistic mediator. Added to her experience is a significant presence on various committees and boards of directors of organizations dedicated to dance in Quebec.
